Chapter 15: Sunday Dinner

Odessa set the roast in the middle of the table and picked up the carving knife.

"Everybody sits," she said. "That includes the man who isn't family."

Desmond sat.

He had come up the drive on Sunday at six with flowers for the hostess.

He had also brought a bottle of wine that cost more than the pickup.

Odessa had put the flowers in a coffee can and the wine on the sideboard.

"Thursday was unpleasant," he said, unfolding his napkin. "I'd like to put it behind us, as adults."

"Eat," Odessa said, and dropped a slice of brisket onto his plate like a verdict.

He looked at Jarrett, and then at me, with the soft attentive face he had worn when he asked me to marry him.

"Calla. I've been unfair."

"Have you."

"I made a mistake with the gala. I let the lawyers run it."

He lowered his voice.

"The note on that cover sheet. It's about you."

I cut a potato in half.

"I'm listening."

"You asked me for Kiera," he said. "In the spring. You wanted a decoy, a face for the name, so nobody would ever photograph you."

"Did I?"

"It's in your own letter. 'No appearance.' I only did what you asked."

"And the thirty percent?"

"A joint decision. You were right there, at the kitchen table."
