Chapter 15: Her Choice

Amos picked up on the fourth ring.

"I've got him," he said. "He's in the school office with a granola bar, and I'm standing in the doorway."

My legs started working again.

"A fellow with a camera came up the walk at drop-off," Amos said. "Cade's on his way. Come to the house, Mara, not the shop."

I found them in the farmhouse kitchen an hour later.

Eli sat on the counter with his sneakers swinging, telling Cade the camera man had a bad haircut.

"Am I famous now?" he asked me.

"A little."

"Do I get a trophy?"

"You get a grilled cheese," Cade said, and turned back to the stove with a spatula in his scarred hand.

I watched him flip the sandwich.

He did it carefully.

We stayed that night, because a crowd was still camped outside my shop.

Amos made up the guest room for the two of us, and Eli fell asleep in four minutes with his toy wrench under his chin.

I lay beside him in the dark for an hour.

Down the hall a pipe knocked, and water began to run.

I got up.

I did not tell myself it was a mistake.
