Chapter 29: Reopening
On the night before the 79th Street store reopened, I swept the floor.
It was the second Friday of December, and the lawyers had finished with us three weeks earlier.
The roof was new, and the coolers hummed in a row along the back wall.
The shelves smelled of fresh pine and paint.
The plywood was gone from the windows.
Through the clean glass, the street lamps lit the empty aisles.
I had a push broom from the hardware store and nobody to watch me use it.
I started at the front door and worked toward the back, one aisle at a time.
My father taught me to sweep that way on an ore boat deck.
I swept up sawdust, a bent nail, a curl of blue tape.
I swept under the produce tables where the oranges would go.
When I reached the meat counter, I stopped.
The old sign still hung over it, hand-lettered, on a board gone yellow.
