Chapter 17: The Chair
The Garland boardroom was on the fortieth floor of a glass tower downtown, and it had a view of the whole east side.
I could see the plant from there, a gray box the size of a thumbnail.
The chair of the board sat at the head of a long table in a navy suit.
She was seventy-three, with white hair cut short and reading glasses pushed up into it.
Nobody had brought her coffee, and she did not seem to want any.
Four floor leaders in work jackets sat along one wall, looking like men who'd been called to the principal's office.
Cleo sat on my right with her hands folded.
I set the bracket on the table in front of me.
"Mr. Danner," the chair said. "I've read the letter."
"I've also read the plant's field return log, which a woman from your old rear line brought to my house on Sunday night."
"Yes, ma'am."
"I've known Lyman Byers for twenty-two years. I picked him. I'd like to be sure before I say I picked wrong."
