Chapter 15: The Bus Station

Nolan found his wife at the Brightwater bus station at three in the morning.

He had not needed an investigator for it.

Selena had told him once, in the first year, that she had come to this city on a night bus at twelve with one bag. She had said the bus station was where her life had started.

She sat on the last bench under a dead vending machine, with the baby asleep against her chest.

Her honey hair was tied back with a hotel rubber band.

She had no lipstick on, and for the first time in five years he saw her real face.

He sat down at the other end of the bench.

She did not look at him.

"I knew it would be you," she said.

"The ticket window opens at five," Nolan said. "Where were you going?"

"Anywhere." Her voice had lost its softness. It was flat and tired and much older. "Your friend's mother threw me out of her house. Cal hasn't answered his phone in six hours."

"He's busy."

"He's with his lawyer, saving himself."

She let out a short laugh.

"He would drop me in a river to keep his name clean. I've known that since I was twenty-one, and I loved him anyway."

Nolan said nothing.

"Do you want to hear it?" Selena asked. "It's the only true thing I've got left, so you may as well have it."

"Go on."

"The orphanage was in a mill town." She stared at the floor. "I was twelve when his aunt took me home. She said I'd be company for her sister's boy."

"Calvin."

"He was nineteen and he was kind to me. He taught me to ride a bike in the driveway." Her mouth shook. "Nobody else ever taught me anything for free."
