Chapter 6: What Her Milk Was For

At two in the morning, Calvin finally came to the hospital.

Elise was awake, sitting up in bed with the baby on her arm.

Jodie was in the chair by the window, and she stood up fast.

"Twenty minutes, I said. It's been six hours."

Calvin ignored her. His coat was creased and he smelled of smoke and expensive perfume.

He looked at Elise. "You're feeling better."

"What do you want?" Elise asked.

"Not here." He glanced at Jodie. "Come out to the family lounge. I need to speak to you alone."

"Anything you say to me, you say here," Elise said.

He took a breath and let his shoulders drop. For a moment he looked almost gentle.

"Ellie, Miles can't keep formula down. He throws up everything. The pediatrician says breast milk is the only thing he can take."

"Then take him to a milk bank," Elise said.

"Selena's milk hasn't come in. She's exhausted." He held her gaze. "You have so much, you've been nursing for a month. Pump for him. Just until she's better."

Nobody in the room moved.

Jodie made a sound in her throat.

Elise looked at him for a long time.

"You want me to pump milk for your cousin's son," she said.

"He's a baby," Calvin said. "He's hungry. You're a mother, so you understand."

"I understand," Elise said. "Does Selena know you're asking?"

"She asked me to." He said it quickly, expecting that to settle it. "She said yours is the best because you eat clean and you're healthy."
