Chapter 13: The Offer
"Tell him no," I said.
The aide on the phone laughed, polite and patient.
"He's come a very long way, Ms. Garvin. Ten minutes. The lobby of his hotel, so it's all very public. Eleven tomorrow."
I looked at the scan printout propped against the sugar bowl.
Gran was pretending not to listen with her one good eye.
"Fine," I said. "Ten minutes."
I hung up.
Gran buttered the last of her scone.
"Was that the cow's husband?"
"That was his aide."
"Same thing with a tie on." She pointed her knife at Benedict. "You're going with her."
"She didn't ask me to."
"I'm asking you."
Benedict looked at me.
"I'd like you there," I said. "Don't say anything."
"I never say anything."
The hotel was on Piccadilly, all marble and gold mirrors and a man in a top hat on the door.
The deputy mayor sat in a wingback chair in the middle of the lobby with a pot of tea and two aides.
One was the smooth voice from the phone. The other held a leather folder on her knees.
There were people everywhere. Tourists. A wedding party checking in. A businessman on a laptop at the next table.
