Chapter 15: The Dismissal
"She's recruiting," Benedict said. "That silhouette's Preston."
"It could be anyone."
"It's got his hair."
I zoomed in. It had his hair.
I put the phone face down on his duvet.
"I'm not going to that."
"Good."
"I'm going to have breakfast. What have you got?"
He thought about it.
"Toast," he said. "And a very old jar of Gran's marmalade I'm frightened of."
We ate the toast at his kitchen counter in the pink light.
He made me ginger tea from a tin he'd bought, he said, by accident.
The tin was new. It still had the price sticker on.
"By accident," I said.
"It was next to the coffee."
He walked me to the lab at eight, and we didn't hold hands, and the twins knew anyway.
"Morning," said the one on the left.
"Morning," said the one on the right, with the exact same face.
"Not one word," Benedict said, and went into his office.
The one on the left wrote something on a sticky note and stuck it to my monitor.
"FINALLY. The whole floor."
