Chapter 16: Brody

Brody was standing on the pavement outside the green door in his Pirates hoodie, in July, in a heatwave.

He had a carry-on suitcase with a broken wheel and a backpack on one shoulder.

He looked like he hadn't slept since Pittsburgh.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

"I didn't know if you'd come down."

"I didn't know if I would either."

He looked at my bump.

His face crumpled a little.

"You're really big."

"Thanks, Brody."

"No, I mean, it's real. It's really real." He wiped his face with his sleeve. "Mom said Kenzie said..."

"I know what Kenzie said."

A delivery van went past. The receptionist was watching us through the glass, one hand on her phone.

Brody let go of the suitcase handle.

"I'm sorry," he said. "That's the first thing. I've been practicing on the plane and it's still the first thing."

"Okay."

"I believed Mom when she said you were in on it. Because I wanted the contract more than I wanted to ask." He swallowed. "Then the video came out and I still didn't call you. I texted you to be nice. I'm the one who wasn't nice."
