Chapter 6: Your Love Came Late
The roses were the wrong kind.
I'd told him once, early on, that white roses looked like a funeral to me.
He'd nodded and kissed my hand and clearly never heard a word.
"Come home to what?" I asked.
"To us. To the house on Tradd Street. Mom already signed the lease for us." He held the flowers out. "I know I screwed up. I panicked. She called me crying from Paris three days before, and I didn't know how to tell you."
"Three days before."
"I was going to tell you."
"When? At the altar? On our anniversary?"
One of the guests on the settee, a gray-haired woman in a sun visor, set her brochure down entirely.
Brandon lowered his voice.
"Can we go somewhere private?"
"No," I said. "You left me in front of a hundred and eighty people. You can talk in front of three."
His jaw tightened.
Behind the desk, the clerk became very interested in her computer.
"Fine," Brandon said. "Fine. I made a mistake. I'm saying it. I'm sorry."
"Which part?"
"What?"
"Which part was the mistake? Sending Darren to carry me? Giving her your grandmother's ring? Leaving the garden?"
He opened his mouth and closed it.
"Or marrying me in the first place," I said.
He looked down at the roses.
That was the answer, and we both heard it.
"I loved her first," he said finally, very low. "Four years. I never stopped. I thought I had, and then she called, and I just..."
"Went."
"I thought you'd understand. You always understand." He looked up at me with those brown eyes that used to work. "I thought you'd wait. You always wait."
The woman in the sun visor said, "Oh, no he didn't," under her breath.
I felt something in my chest go very quiet and very clear.
"Brandon. You're telling me you love her and you thought I'd wait."
