Chapter 13: The Tea

I grabbed the quilt and Ambrose grabbed me, and for one second we were a mess of limbs and stars.

"Goldie," I said, with the quilt up to my chin. "What about the tea?"

"It tastes of pennies," she said through her fingers. "It has always tasted of pennies."

"You told me that at the trustee meeting."

"I've been thinking about it for forty years," said Goldie, "and this morning I finally thought it out loud."

Ambrose had not moved.

Every lamp in the room was dark, and his surface was as still as a frozen pond.

"The dose is in the pot," he said slowly. "Not in the cups."

"Who makes the pot?" I asked.

"The cook," Goldie whispered. "Every morning at five."

I had my shirt on backward and my skirt on sideways when I hit the kitchen.

Ambrose came behind me in his coat, and Goldie came behind him, leaving a wet trail on the stair.

Jasper was already sitting on the counter with a spoon, eating jam out of the jar.

He saw my face and put the spoon down.

"Oh, you found out," he said. "I felt it from the library. Something just clicked."
