Chapter 16: The East Wing

I hit the iron doors with both fists.

They rang and didn't give an inch.

"Open it!" I shouted. "Barnaby Roake, you open this door!"

Nothing answered me but the hum of a lock.

Jasper came pounding down the corridor with his jacket flapping, and Goldie behind him, barefoot, holding up her gown in both hands.

"They put a seal on it," Jasper said, panting. "It's an electric lock. Four men inside. Two of them are lying about being asleep."

"Can you get through it?" I asked Goldie.

"I can get through anything," she said, and then her face crumpled.

"But I've never called the water on purpose. It only comes when I'm upset."

"Then cry."

"I can't on command!"

"Goldie." I took her wet face between my hands.

"He's behind that door, and he's cold and alone."

"They're going to put him in a bed and never let him out."

She looked at the iron.

"Oh," she whispered. "Oh, that's mean."

Water began to come out of the walls.
