"Who is coming for you?" I said again.

Ambrose stood up and pulled on his trousers, and the lamp burned on, steady.

"Roake's firm," he said. "The lawyers filed at midnight. I had the notice from the guard."

"Filed what?"

"A petition in family court. For your sister."

I sat up so quickly the quilt flew off the bed.

"They want to take Pippa?"

"They say you are an unfit guardian. That you keep a child in a house of monsters."

"She chose the house."

"Fourteen years old does not choose in front of a judge."

His voice was flat, and his hands shook.

"They will ask the court to put her in state care."

"A lawyer brings the papers at nine, and a social worker comes by noon."

"Then I'll talk to the social worker."

"And if you are gone, there is no house for the court to call unfit."

"You are only a woman who left a bad job. You take Pippa and go back to Newburgh."

"And you?"

"I stay here."
