Chapter 24: The Heirs
The marshals brought Barnaby Roake up the drive in the back of a gray car at ten on Saturday morning.
He wore a county-issue jacket two sizes too large and a pair of steel cuffs.
The silver was gone from his hair, or the shine of it was.
Behind the hedge, the trustees stood in a row with the press, and forty staff in their good clothes stood on the porch.
The cook was in front, with a silver tray in her hands.
"The former Director," said the marshal, "to deliver the keys under court order."
Roake held out a ring with a hundred keys on it, and his hands shook so that they chimed.
"Thornwick Hall," he said, to the lawn. "And everything in it. Returned."
"Say it properly," I said.
I stood on the front steps in my mother's old cardigan, with my wedding dress over my arm and my hair half done.
"I beg your pardon?"
"You've got cameras in front of you. Say what you did."
He looked at the reporters, and the reporters looked at him.
"I regret any distress," Roake said, stiffly, "caused by my stewardship."
"Lie," said Jasper, from the porch, with immense contentment. "That one lit up the whole county."
