Chapter 6: Fifty Thousand
The guard on the ninth floor was six foot four and wore a gray blazer with no name tag.
He stood in front of room 912 with his hands folded.
"Visitors are by approval only," he said.
"Whose approval?" I asked.
"Mr. Garland's."
"She's my girlfriend."
"I understand, sir. You're not on the list."
Beth came around the corner behind me with a paper cup in her hand and her badge clipped to her shirt.
She had driven in from her night shift and had not slept.
"Is there a problem?" she said brightly.
"No, ma'am. Only the list."
"What list?"
"The approved visitors."
Beth looked at him for a long moment, and then she smiled very wide.
"Sir, I'm going to say a few things loudly, and I'd like you to listen."
She did not wait for permission.
"My brother's partner is a patient in this hospital. She is conscious and competent. A private man has put a guard on her door without her consent, and nobody has asked her if she wants it. In my state that has a name. It's called restraint of a patient."
The guard's face did not move.
"I can call the charge nurse on this floor," Beth said. "I can call the hospital's patient advocate. And I can call the police, and tell them one of their people is blocking a woman's door."
A nurse at the station had stopped typing.
A man in a visitor's badge at the water fountain had turned around.
"Ma'am," the guard said. "Please lower your voice."
"No," said Beth.
From behind the door of 912 came a thin voice.
"Let him in."
The guard glanced toward the sound.
"Let him in," Callie said again, louder, and I heard her voice crack. "I want my boyfriend in here."
