Mr. Hendry sat down across from me without being asked, and put the check on the table between our plates.

I did not pick it up.

"It's the whole amount," he said. "Forty-one thousand dollars. I've seen the statements twice."

"I know what it is."

"Then why aren't you taking it?"

"Because you're not done," I said. "Lacey is about to come through that door."

He turned his hat over in his hands.

"She'll ask you for something."

"I know."

The bell rang.

Lacey came in with Eli's backpack over one shoulder and Eli by the wrist.

The whole diner watched her walk down the aisle.

She had on yesterday's wrap dress, and her hair was flat on one side from the car seat.

She stopped at my table and her mouth shook.

"Maggie, please."

"Sit down, Lacey, or don't. But keep your voice down. He's right there."

Eli stood beside her with his coat zipped to his chin.

He was looking at the pie case.

"I need a place for one week," she said. "Just a week. Russ won't pick up. I have nothing in the house on Lark Street but a lease Troy signed, and Troy's lawyer says he's done paying it."

"That's Troy's lawyer's call."

"You have four bedrooms."

"I have one baby, one mother and one grandmother's house."

"You can't put a child on the street!"

"I'm not," I said. "I'm putting you on the street."
