Chapter 16: Next Month, Finally
My mother drove home on the second Saturday of March, and the house got very quiet.
She stood on the porch with her car keys in her hand and her purse over her arm.
"You can call me at three in the morning," she said. "You know that."
"I know."
"Don't call me about the man across the lane. Go knock on his door."
"Mom."
"He sat up with a stranger's child on a staircase. I've had two husbands and neither would have." She kissed Poppy's head, and then mine. "I'm only saying it once."
She drove off, and I stood on the porch with the baby for a while, watching the road.
At eight, a truck turned into the drive.
It was not a company truck.
It was an old green pickup with a rusted fender, and Troy got out of it in a stained sweatshirt, with a paint can in each hand.
He stopped at the bottom of the steps, and did not come up.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said.
"What's in the cans?"
"Yellow. The one you picked." He looked at his boots. "You asked me to paint the nursery in October, and I said next month. I said it every month after that."
I said nothing.
"I took the night shift at the grain elevator in January. I've got Saturdays. I can do it in one day, and I'll bring my own tape, and you don't have to be in the room."
"Troy."
"I'll leave the keys on the porch when I'm done."
I looked at him for a long moment.
His hands were chapped, and he had lost weight in the face.
