Chapter 23: Bowl 101

By five on Saturday, the line ran out of the diner and down Main Street to the hardware store.

It was nine degrees, and nobody went home.

Caleb had pushed all the tables together into one long row.

The soup kettles stood on the counter in a line, steaming up the windows.

Chicken and rice, my grandmother's, and tomato, and potato leek, and a pot of beans for anyone who wanted it plain.

Poppy sat in a high chair at the head of the table in a paper crown.

A single candle was stuck in a muffin on her tray.

She had been one year old since four in the morning, and she had spent the whole day unimpressed.

"You do the first one," Caleb said.

"The first what?"

"Bowl."

He put a white bowl with a blue rim into my hands.

I stood at the counter with the ladle.

The first in line was the principal, in her good coat.

I filled the bowl, and gave it to her.

"Thank you for coming," I said.

"Happy birthday to your girl, Mrs. Doyle."

"Maggie. I took the name back."

She smiled, and went to sit.

After her came the nurse who had called the diner for me the night Poppy was born.

She was in jeans, and I almost did not know her.

"Thank you for coming," I said, and I put the bowl into both her hands.

"It's the best soup in the county," she said, and I said I knew.

After her came my mother, who had driven four hours with a cake in a cooler.

After her came the waitress, who did not need soup, and took it.

I said it to every one.
