Chapter 4: What I Asked For

"He's the man who brought me soup," I said.

Troy's mother looked at Caleb again, longer this time.

"At the hospital. While my son is sitting on a plastic chair outside."

"Yes."

"Maggie, that is not appropriate."

Caleb put on his cap. "I'll go."

"Stay," I said. "Please. I'd like a witness."

He stayed by the wall and said nothing.

She came to the foot of the bed and unfolded the paper.

I could see a few lines in Troy's handwriting, and a lot of crossed-out words.

"He wrote this in the waiting room," she said. "He's been crying since noon. I have never seen him like this."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

"It's supposed to make you listen."

"Then read it to me."

She cleared her throat.

"I made a mistake. I was lonely. It was only breakfast. I love you and the baby more than anything and I would never."

"Stop," I said.

She stopped.

"Is that the whole letter?"

"It's very heartfelt."

"He wrote 'only breakfast.' I read the messages in the car, so I know what it was."

Her mouth went thin. "A man is allowed to be kind to a coworker."

"He made her breakfast every weekday for twenty weeks. He numbered them. She texted him a heart every time."

"That is not a crime."

"Last night I asked him for a bowl of soup."

She frowned. "Soup."

"I was thirty-nine weeks. It was eleven o'clock. I had been on my feet all day and I could barely stand. I said, Troy, could you heat up a can of soup. He didn't look up from his phone."

"He was tired."

"He told her about it at 11:14. He wrote, I told her I was wiped, I'm saving it for your breakfast."

The room was quiet.

Poppy made a small sound against my neck.
