Chapter 8: The Group Post

By Thursday, Troy's side of the story was on the Little Pines community page.

My next-door neighbor sent me the screenshot with a row of angry faces.

It had been posted by Troy's mother, with a photo of Poppy's hospital bracelet that I had never given anyone.

"My daughter-in-law is not herself since the birth. She has locked my son out of his home and his newborn. Please pray for our family and give us privacy."

Under it were forty comments.

Some said they were praying, and some said postpartum was hard.

One said, "Isn't that the one who threw a woman's pans on her lawn?"

My mother read it over my shoulder in the kitchen and said a word I had not heard her use since 1998.

"I'll answer it," she said.

"No."

"Maggie."

"I'm not going to argue in the comments. They would have to take my side or his, and I'd rather they heard it from me."

I did not have to wait long.

On Friday, the principal of Little Pines Elementary called me herself.

She was a brisk, kind woman with a lot of keys, and I had met her once, years ago, at a fundraiser.

"Mrs. Keller, I want to be very clear that I'm not taking a side," she said. "But the parent council has asked me to hold a short meeting at the school this afternoon, because three families have written about the Father & Child Breakfast. I'd like you there, if you can manage it."

"Is Troy coming?"

"I've invited him, yes."

"Then I'll be there."

I put Poppy in the carrier and called my mother to drive.

At the school gate, Caleb's truck was parked behind my mother's car.

He got out and leaned against the door.

"I was dropping off the bread order," he said. "For the cafeteria."

"Do you do that on Fridays?"

"I do now."

I shook my head, and I walked inside with my mother beside me.

The meeting was in the same cafeteria.

They had taken down the heart banner, but a pink paper heart still clung to the window.
