Chapter 9: Caleb's Cold Coffee

Caleb's POV

I closed the diner at nine on Friday, and I was wiping the counter when Russ Hendry came in.

I had known Russ since high school.

He had played linebacker, and I had washed dishes for his father's Christmas party, and neither of us had ever thought about the other much.

He sat at the counter without taking off his jacket.

"We're closed," I said.

"Coffee."

I poured it anyway.

He drank it black and said nothing for a minute.

The sign in the window said Open, and I had turned it over, but he had not looked at it.

"You were at the school today," he said.

"I was dropping off bread."

"On a Friday."

"I deliver on Fridays now."

He looked at me over the rim.

He was a big man, bigger than me, and he sat the way big men sit when they have been told to take less room.

"You're friends with Maggie Doyle."

"I'm her neighbor."

"That's not what I asked."

"It's what I'm answering."

He put the cup down carefully.

"She went to the school with a clinic's name on her phone," he said. "I saw it on the screen when she took the baby out. Did she say anything to you about a test?"

"What kind of test?"

"Any kind."

"Russ," I said. "She's got a three-week-old baby and a lawyer's letter coming. I don't think she's got room for a test."
