Chapter 15: Nobody Touches

Kathleen's POV

The man in the gray jacket had knocked on my studio door at half past ten and told me where my husband was.

"He is downstairs, Miss Marrin, and he has signed."

Now I stood on the green carpet and looked at Donovan sitting at an empty table with his hand bandaged and his name on a black card.

"Get up," I said.

"Kate."

"Get up. Now."

I turned to the dealer.

"Is it true? He signed himself in?"

"He signed as living, Mrs. Marrin. He is the house's guest until the holder lets him go."

"I'm the holder."

"You are."

"Then I let him go."

"Say it to the book."

I laid the marker beside the ledger.

"I release Donovan Rask from this house," I said. "Strike him out."

The dealer drew a line through the name with the pen Donovan had used.

The ceiling speaker clicked.

"His signature stays," said my father's voice. "The pledge is sound now. Nobody in a courtroom can undo it. But he is free to go, and he is yours to keep or throw out."

I didn't answer the old man.

I took Donovan by the front of his wet coat and walked him to the lift.

We went two blocks through the rain to the Rask Grand.

He had taken a suite on the fourteenth floor, and his suitcase from the Lakeshore house stood open on the rack.

The suite was dim and clean and smelled of nobody.

I shut the door and put my back against it.

"I told you to do one thing that costs," I said. "That was this morning. I was thinking of a speech!"

"You told me not to stand."

"I didn't tell you to sell yourself to a casino!"

"You told me to do something that cost me, and it cost me, and I'd do it again."

His voice was low and steady.

His face was wet from the rain, and I had never seen him look so entirely sure.
