Chapter 24: The Guest List
Conroy pulled his jacket back on, and we walked down the dock road barefoot with my shoes in my hand.
Amos had already got there first.
He stood at the head of his own dock with a bait bucket in each fist, between Colin and the shop door.
"Evening," Amos said.
Colin straightened.
His tuxedo was creased, his tie was gone, and he held the old key ring up in front of him.
"Mr. Schuler. This is the lawyer from my mother's office." He nodded at the man in the gray suit. "We're here to serve notice on the house."
"Which house?"
"Your granddaughter's. On Cutler Street."
The lawyer opened his folder, glanced at the first page, and stopped.
I came up the dock in my wedding dress with the lake behind me.
"You have the receipts, I assume," I said. "From the roof and the kitchen. Mine are in my mother's banker's boxes, and they are dated before you ever met me."
The lawyer read one more page.
He closed the folder.
"Mr. Rutledge," he said, "I'd advise that we withdraw the claim."
"You said it was a sure thing."
"I said that last week." He turned to me. "Ms. Schuler, on behalf of the firm, I apologize. I was not shown the dates."
"Thank you," I said.
He left without looking back, walking fast along the boards.
Colin stood alone at the end of the dock with the keys.
"I only wanted," he said, and then he didn't seem to know what he had wanted.
I held out my hand.
He dropped the old key ring into my palm.
