Chapter 15: What It Cost

Devin's parents came on Friday at ten, and they brought Devin with them.

His father was a heavy, gray man in a camel coat who had shaken my hand at the engagement dinner with both of his.

He didn't shake it now.

"Miss Hennessey," he said. "May we come in?"

My mother set out coffee, and nobody drank it.

Darek stood by the television, where he had said he would stay unless I told him otherwise.

I had told him to be there.

Devin sat on the edge of the sofa with his hands between his knees, and he didn't look at me.

His mother sat very straight beside him.

"I owe you an apology," she said to me. "I put a heart on a photograph. I took a ring off your finger and sent it to my son on a trip I knew about."

"Yes, you did."

"I was told it was a prewedding game." She turned and looked at her son. "I was told a lot of things."

Devin stared at the rug.

His father cleared his throat.

"I've spent three days with my son," he said. "I drove him around Savannah and made him say it from the start, twice."

"I'm sorry, sir," Devin said.

"Don't speak yet."

Devin shut his mouth.

"I've run my company for thirty years," his father said. He was speaking to the room now. "A man who rigs a number and cancels a woman's flight so she can't get home is a man I can't put in front of my customers."
