"He lost because the number was mine," Lila said. "That's the rule. The number decides, and nobody argues with it."

"Lila," Devin said. "Stop."

"Why? Ansley wanted a round." She turned to the room. "I'm happy to give her one."

She wasn't loud, and she wasn't crying.

She spoke the way she always spoke to me, easy and warm.

"Here's the truth," she said. "Yes, we went to Nashville. Yes, there was one suite. Yes, I won it fairly."

"It wasn't fair," Darek said. "He typed it in."

"He typed it because I asked him to." Her eyes didn't leave me. "I told him I needed something that was mine this year. My father died, Ansley. You sent a casserole."

"I sat with you at the funeral," I said.

"You sat with me for forty minutes and then you left to meet a caterer."

Somebody behind me muttered her name.

I had no answer, because it was true.

I had left at the reception for a cake tasting with Devin.

"That doesn't mean you take my fiancé to a hotel," I said.

"I didn't take him. He came." She spread her hands. "He's been coming to me for years. He doesn't know how to stop."

"Lila," Devin said again. "That's enough."

"You asked for the truth," she said to me. "Do you want it or not?"

"I want it."

"Then you should hear that you were never a surprise to him."
