Chapter 6: So I Stopped Asking

Lydia came in with a grocery bag on one hip and her keys still in her hand.

She saw me on the mat, and her whole body stopped.

"What is he doing here?" she said.

Macy was off the sofa in one motion.

"I told him to wait," she said, and her voice went high and wet. "Lyd, I told him to wait for you. I thought if we all just sat down."

"You let him in your home."

"He was on the step. People were filming."

Lydia put the grocery bag on the counter.

The lemons rolled a little in their bowl.

"You came to her door," she said to me. "After my father told you not to. After I told you."

"I came to ask her a question."

"She's pregnant, Levi."

"I know she is. I'm asking whose it is."

Macy made a small broken sound and sat back down hard, one hand pressed low on her stomach.

Lydia crossed the room in three steps and knelt in front of her.

"Hey. Hey. Look at me. Breathe."

"I'm okay," Macy whispered. "I'm okay, I just feel dizzy."

I stood there.

I had asked one question, in a quiet voice, with my hands at my sides.

And the woman I had loved for ten years was kneeling on the floor holding the hand of the person who answered it with tears.

I took the folded sheet from my back pocket.

"Lydia."

She did not turn.

"This is Nan's discharge form from the night of the eighteenth. It has the times. It has my signature as her ride home. I was in a plastic chair at the ER until nearly two."
