Chapter 14: What She Offers
Annabel had written the resignation on Sunday night, by hand, on the cream paper her father used.
It was one paragraph.
She had planned to read it standing up, and she did.
"I'm stepping down as chair, effective today," she said to the table. "Nothing in this company should be able to be pulled by my husband's name again."
Her voice came out level.
Her left hand, under the edge of the glass, was shaking against her knee.
She did not look at Kenneth.
If she looked at him, she would see him at the end of the table in his one dark suit.
He would be standing very straight, and she would lose the sentence.
The old man at the far end cleared his throat.
He had been her father's lawyer once and sat on the board because nobody had ever dared to take his chair.
"Mrs. Wexford."
"Miss Wexford, on this paper," she said. "It's my company's name."
"Annabel," he said, which he had not called her in nine years. "Sit down."
"I'd rather you accepted it."
"I'm sure you would. I've been on this board since before you could drive, and I've never heard a more expensive piece of foolishness."
Someone near the middle made a small noise that might have been a laugh.
"A man made a mistake at twenty-five," the old lawyer said. "Another man used it as a weapon against this company. You've just taken the blackmailer's seat away in front of us. You've done the work."
He looked down the table.
"Do I have a motion to refuse?"
"So moved," said a woman in navy.
