Chapter 5: Girlfriend of Three Months
The car that came for me was black, and the driver didn't speak.
The Brodsky Grand rose over Michigan Avenue in white stone and gold light.
I walked through its lobby in the same leather jacket I'd walked out in, and a woman in a gray suit met me by the elevators without saying hello.
The boardroom was on the thirtieth floor.
It had a table the length of a bus, and six people sat along it with folders in front of them.
At the far end, with her back to the windows, sat a silver-haired woman in pearls.
"Miss Keane," said Margaret Brodsky. "Sit."
I stayed standing.
"Mr. Kroll was kind enough to send your full name this morning," she said. "And a great deal of context."
Dennis again.
My nails dug into my palms.
"Whatever he told you is a lie."
"I'm sure that's what you'd say." She pushed a folder across the table toward me. "Inside is a settlement. Two hundred thousand dollars, and a statement saying nothing happened between you and my son. You'll sign it, and the photographs will not exist."
"They exist now."
"Not for long, with the right lawyers."
One of the men on her right cleared his throat. "Margaret, if it came out that a member of the family had..."
"It will not come out," she said without turning her head.
I looked at the folder.
Two hundred thousand dollars would have buried my mother's bills and left me a down payment on a life.
Fifty thousand had been an insult.
Two hundred thousand was a gag.
