Chapter 18: What Mom Knew

Mom sat at the kitchen table with her coat still buttoned.

Nana Bess put a cup of tea in front of her, hard enough that it slopped into the saucer, and said nothing at all.

Grandpa stood in the doorway to the yard with his arms crossed. He had not come in.

I sat across from Mom. Callie sat next to me. Roark leaned on the counter behind me, close enough that I could feel him there.

"Alpha Eskildsen filed a petition with the Council yesterday afternoon," Mom said. "I heard it from a friend at Moon Rise."

"What does it say?"

"That the Blue Crescent seat was taken on a false oath of pure blood."

"By Dad."

"Yes." Her hands lay folded on the table, and the knuckles were white. "The Council will ask him to shift in front of the packs. It meets at Moon Rise at the full moon after this one."

"And he'll say no."

"He'll say you're lying. He'll say Grandpa is a bitter old man, and you are a sick girl who was never right."

"He already told me to say it was a fever."

Mom closed her eyes.

"I knew he would," she said.

Nobody spoke. A pot ticked on the stove.

"I want to tell you what I knew," Mom said. "I'm not asking you to forgive any of it. I want you to hear it."

I didn't say yes. I didn't say no.

"He told me the night before the wedding. He sat on the edge of my bed and told me he was half bear."
