Chapter 14: Alone
I put two fingers on his wrist and breathed in for four.
He matched me.
On the long out-breath the fourteen lamps went down one by one.
The night guard's keys stopped outside the door.
"Anyone in there?" he called.
"Just me," Anselm said, in a steady voice. "Locking up."
"Night, Mr. Corday."
The keys jingled away, and I laughed into his shoulder until my ribs hurt.
That was Tuesday.
On Sunday afternoon I stood in the hall outside Meeting Room 2, with my back against the door, and listened to him fail.
It was the third day of trying.
He had made me promise to stay in the hall.
"The county room will have a clerk and Duane," he had said.
"Two people who don't love me. I have to know I can do it in front of strangers."
"Then I'll be a stranger."
"You can't be a stranger. I can feel you through the wall."
