Chapter 15: Colin Tries Again

On Friday night Colin brought five people and a camera.

The camera was a small one.

A young man in a black beanie held it, and he filmed the bread basket.

We had the round table in the back again.

Hank sat with his hands folded on the cloth.

I sat at his left in my cream blouse, with a glass of water and a yellow pad closed in front of me.

The woman from the network sat across from us.

Beside her were two men in dark jackets, and a woman with a laptop who introduced herself as counsel.

Colin sat at the head, tanned and smiling, with a glass of red wine.

"Tonight," he said, "we're going to be adults about this."

"Please," said Hank.

"The note is the note. The contract is the contract. If you sign season five tonight, I'll withdraw the call on the loan."

He slid a folder across the cloth.

"Page nine, the temper clause. Initial it, sign the last page, and we eat."

Hank looked at the folder.

He did not touch it.

The room was quiet except for the clink of glasses in the dining room beyond the door.

I could feel the old pull in him, the one that wanted to stand and shout.

His knee was against mine under the table.

I put my hand on his thigh, once, lightly.

He let out a long breath.

"No," he said.

He said it softly, almost kindly.

Colin's smile stayed where it was.

"Excuse me?"

"No, Colin. I won't sign it."

"Then I call the loan on Monday, and the lease the week after."
