Chapter 18: The Pad, Revised
The next Sunday we sat at my kitchen table with two mugs and the yellow pad, and a pen each.
It was our Sunday review.
Hank took the first turn, because I had told him to.
"Yes list," he read. "Same as before, plus one."
"Go on."
"Her hand in the truck." He stopped. "I'm adding the truck."
"Add it."
He wrote it down with his tongue between his teeth.
"No list. Same as before. Being left alone after is still the one that matters."
"Underline it again."
He did, twice.
"Maybe list." He hesitated. "Being spanked. Her hand, flat. I wrote it last Sunday and I didn't say."
"I saw."
His ears went red.
"And her telling me she's tired."
"That one is mine," I said. "It's on the wrong list."
"Where does it go?"
I took the pen and moved it myself.
I wrote it at the bottom of the yes list, in my smallest handwriting.
Being held.
He looked at it for a long time.
