Chapter 22: Second Season
My voice was still a rasp on Monday morning.
"You sound like a smoker," Hank said in the elevator.
"You did that."
"I'm very proud."
The car rose twenty floors in a mirrored silence.
He wore a grey suit I had never seen, with the cuff of his right sleeve pulled down over the black band.
I reached out and straightened his tie.
"Show me your hands."
He held them out.
They were steady.
"Where's the pan you want to throw?"
"In the truck."
"Good."
I took his right wrist through the sleeve and pressed my thumb on the band, twice.
His breath slowed.
"Whatever you decide in there," I said, in my ruined voice, "I'll think it's right."
"Even if it's no?"
"Especially."
The doors opened on a glass corridor.
The conference room had a long white table and a view of the river.
The woman from the network sat at the head in a grey blazer.
