Chapter 23: Void or Vow
Dev took the pages from my hand.
He read the first one all the way down, to the line where my name sat in blue ink under the word Respondent.
Then he tore it in half.
He tore it in quarters, and the quarters in eighths, and dropped them in the bin under the workbench, among the stems.
"No," he said.
"Dev."
"You signed it to prove a point.
"I know what the point is.
"It's a good one, and I've heard it."
"It isn't a point."
"Then what is it?"
I took a breath.
I had decided in the van, and then I had decided again on the steps, and I had never been so sure of anything.
"I won't be your wife by forgery," I said.
"I'm not saying I don't want to be.
"I'm saying a woman with a county stamp slid me into your name when I was twenty.
"I never got to say yes.
"I want to say yes.
"Or no, if I feel like it.
"On my own signature, on my own day, with my father in a clean shirt."
His eyes had gone very bright.
"So I signed it, and now it's gone," I said.
