It took us two hours to get to Tremont.
The buses had stopped, so we walked the last half mile with our heads down and the snow packing into our collars.
He carried my bag and I carried his sketchbook, held inside my blazer so the pages would stay dry.
By the time I unlocked my door, we were both laughing, helplessly.
"Your eyebrows have icicles," I said.
"Your ears are red."
"They go back when I'm happy."
"They go red when you're freezing."
"Both can be true."
I turned on the lamp and the radiator banged twice, like an old friend clearing his throat.
The flat was tidy and bare, with five drawings still taped to the wall above the table.
Tobias stopped and looked at them.
"You left them up," he said.
"I told you it was a lot of face."
"It's a perfect amount."
I put on the kettle and found the one good can of soup.
