He sat cross-legged on my bed with the sketchbook on his knee and his hair standing up.
I lay against the pillow and tried to think about nothing.
It is harder than it sounds.
I thought about the snow, and about the desk with my name on it that I would sit at on Monday.
I thought about Joan opening her new office door, and about my father in his cap at the back of a room.
Charcoal scratched softly on the page.
"You're thinking too hard," he said. "Your brows are doing a little tent."
"I'm thinking about nothing."
"You're thinking about Joan."
"How do you know?"
"Your eyes went soft in the middle."
I laughed, a tiny breath through my nose, and he said, "There, that's good," and kept drawing.
The light moved on the wall.
Down in the street a plow scraped by, and someone shouted a hello to someone else.
Tobias drew with his tongue just behind his teeth, a thing I had never noticed until then.
He glanced up and down, up and down, in a quick steady rhythm.
