Chapter 23: The Heaven Gate
We came down on the Gate Hill with the sun a hand's width above the sea.
My mother landed on the great paved square before the bronze doors, and the paving cracked under her feet.
Crossbow bolts rattled off her scales.
She roared once, and the men on the wall dropped flat.
"Go," she said, in that low voice in my skull. "I'll hold the square. Bring me what was mine."
I jumped down with Ilsabet's hand in mine and Linnet behind us.
The Heaven Gate stood open a crack, no wider than a man.
Behind it a stair ran down into the hill, lit by torches, and from far below came the grinding of wheels.
We went in.
Thirty men in the Warden's red held the first landing in a shield wall, with spears levelled down the stair.
"Hold there!" the sergeant barked. "By the Warden's order, nothing goes down."
"Then step aside," Ilsabet said. "Nothing needs to."
She raised her iron rod.
