Chapter 10: Tuesday

The boardroom of Corwin Medical was on the forty-first floor.

The table was black glass, long enough to land a plane on.

Twelve chairs were filled, and two more were pulled up against the wall for Billie and me.

Billie wore purple and carried a thermos she claimed was tea.

Warwick sat at the head, in the chairman's seat, with a folder at his elbow.

He gave me a small, friendly nod.

"Gentlemen, ladies," he said. "We are here to vote on the offer from Halvard Partners for the purchase of Corwin Medical at a price of four billion dollars."

"Before we do, I raise a point of order that affects the voting shares."

He opened his folder.

"Nathan Corwin's marriage," he said, "was entered into nine days after he learned of an inconvenient pregnancy. It is a contract, made by a woman who is paid under an agreement, for the sole purpose of obtaining a blocking vote through her children. In other words, it is a sham."

Nathan's hand came down flat on the glass.

"Warwick."

"I merely ask the board to ignore the trust shares until the courts confirm that this is a real family."

The room murmured.

One man, I noticed, nodded.

I stood.

"May I speak?" I said.

Warwick spread his hands. "As a guest."

"Thank you."

I walked to the middle of the table, set my phone down on the glass, and turned up the volume.

"Mr. Corwin says I'm paid," I said. "I would like you all to hear what being paid sounds like."

I pressed play.

His voice came out of my phone, smooth and pleasant, filling the room.

"In two weeks you suffer a tragic miscarriage."

Nobody breathed.

I stopped it there.

I did not need the rest, because the faces around the table were already doing the work.
