Chapter 7: The Rental

By June I could not button my good dress.

At sixteen weeks I looked six months along, and the specialist said that was normal for triplets.

The Corwin Medical board dinner was Saturday, June seventh, in a hotel ballroom with chandeliers the size of cars.

Nathan wore a black tuxedo and stood very close to me in the elevator.

"You don't have to do this," he said.

"They're all going to stare at me anyway. I'd rather they do it with me there."

"They'll be rude."

"Then I'll be rude back."

He looked down at me, and the corner of his mouth lifted.

"I look forward to it," he said.

I wore deep green silk that Billie had picked, cut high under the bust so my belly could do its own talking.

Billie herself sat at our table in black lace with a cane across her knees, glaring at everyone who came near.

There were twelve board members, with their husbands and wives, and every one of them looked at my stomach before they looked at my face.

Dinner was a blur of small talk and soup.

When the plates were cleared, Warwick Corwin tapped his glass with a spoon.

"A few words, if I may," he said.

The room settled.

He rose, handsome and gracious, his hand resting lightly on the back of a chair.

"We have had a difficult spring at Corwin Medical," he began. "Our dear Nathan has stepped into a surprising new chapter. I'd like to welcome his companion for the evening."

Nathan went rigid beside me.

"Miss Penhale is here as our guest," Warwick said. "Our most expensive rental in some time. I do hope the lease runs its course."

A few people laughed, softly.

A woman at the next table looked down at her plate.
