Accidentally Fell for My Ex's Uncle: Dark Alpha novel · Chapter 17 of 24

Chapter 17: The Second Hour

The second hour started at nine twenty-two, in my kitchen, and neither of us knew what to do with our hands.

"Sit," Lucan said.

"I am sitting."

"Sit more."

"There's nowhere to put it."

We sat on opposite sides of the table and watched the stove clock.

Nine twenty-six.

Dottie's voice came through the front door, where she had been banished to the porch.

"Is she dead yet?"

"No," I called.

"Is she going to be?"

"Go away, Dottie."

"I'm not saying I want her to be!"

Frankie began to read the noise ordinance for Riverside aloud, because he was nervous, and it was a quarter to ten before I realized that he was not going to stop.

Lucan's hand lay on the table, palm up.

I put mine in it.

"How do you feel?" he said.

"Fine. A little hungry."

"That is not a symptom."

"It could be."

"Anything else?"

"I keep looking at your mouth."

His eyes went silver.

"That," he said, "is my fault."

Nine fifty-one.

I had been counting the minutes in the back of my head, and every one of them ended with me still being alive.

Nine fifty-five.

"Lucan?"

"Yes."

"I want it noted for the record that if I die in the next twenty-seven minutes, I did not regret this."

"Noted."

"Also I'd like to not die."

"Also noted."

He stood up, and so did I, and the kitchen shrank.

He picked me up by the waist and set me on the counter next to the toaster.

"What are you doing?"

"I am passing the time."

His mouth was on mine before I could ask how.

It was a slow kiss and it went on.

Somewhere in the middle of it I got his shirt open, and he got my sweater over my head, and the cat calendar fell off the wall.
