Chapter 19: Brent's Receipt

Brent had a legal pad.

It was yellow, and it was mine.

I knew because he had stolen it from my apartment eight months ago and used the back pages for grocery lists.

"Poppy," he said again. "I wrote this last night."

"Is it a statement?"

"It's a receipt."

He cleared his throat.

The Council of Pearls had stopped breathing.

"Item one," Brent read. "One girlfriend, told she couldn't come to my family's wedding because it was Moonstone only."

He looked up.

"I was ashamed of where she came from. I'm not sure why. She's the only person I know who has never once been late."

I stared at him.

"Item two. One Landraver girl, kissed in the third row, in front of everyone, while my girlfriend was in the hedge. Cost: one girlfriend. Value: I can't work it out."

Someone in the half circle made a sound.

"Item three." He swallowed. "I said she'd be dead by dinner."

He kept his eyes on the page.

"I said it to scare her. I meant it a little. I'm sorry, because my mother told me it was true."

"Brent," Odette said sharply.

"Item four, Mother."

He turned.

She had set down her cup.

"Last night Uncle Lucan sent me a page," Brent said. "It was in your handwriting. It said, Brent next, if the Goddess is kind."

There was no sound in the chapel at all.

"You told me six brides died of a curse," he said. "You told me I'd be next in line, and I'd better be ready. You let me stand at the back of a wedding and wait for her to fall over."
