Chapter 22: The Hour for Odette

Waiting for somebody else to die turns out to be worse than waiting for yourself.

"I hate this," I told Lucan, at seven thirty-one.

"Yes."

"I hated it at my own. I hate it more at hers."

"That is a sign of character," he said. "Sit down."

We sat on the grass at the edge of the clearing, with the whole pack arranged around us in a ring, and the moon coming up over the river.

Odette knelt on the swearing stone where she had fallen.

Nobody had touched her.

Nobody had offered her a chair.

Her pearls hung loose around her neck, and she was shaking so hard that they rattled.

At seven thirty-five Dottie came back from the crowd with her hands in her pockets.

"There's a betting pool," she said.

"There is not."

"There is. Two hundred wolves. The line is whether the Goddess takes her at fifty-nine minutes or earlier."

"Dottie."

"I want you to know I didn't place a bet."

"Thank you."

"I took all the money and I'm giving it back."

"What?"

"It felt wrong, after yours." She patted her pockets. "I've got eleven hundred dollars here and I'm going to make everyone line up and take it back one at a time."

She marched off with her chin up.

Frankie appeared at my elbow, holding the statute book open.

"I've been checking the exile procedure," he said. "There is one. It's in the back, under 'Sundry.' If the Goddess spares her, the council can strip her name, her house and her pack by a simple vote."

"Is that good?"

"It's very specific, which I like."

At eight o'clock a hush spread through the ring.
