Chapter 20: Eighteen
Calvin Stratford played the last three holes.
He was still the second-best golfer in the world, and now that the weight was off, he was dangerous.
On the sixteenth he hit his approach to four feet and made the birdie.
On the seventeenth he did it again.
Holt parred both holes.
The three-shot lead melted to one.
Little by little, the gallery that had been silent for Calvin began to make noise for him again.
Not cheering.
Just a low, uneasy murmur.
Bryn walked beside Holt with the bag on her left shoulder and her face hard.
Her lips were white, and sweat ran down the pale line of her jaw.
"You okay?" he asked, low.
"I'm carrying thirty-one pounds on half a shoulder," Bryn said. "I've never been better."
He grinned, in spite of everything.
The eighteenth was a long par four with water down the left.
Calvin hit first, and he put his drive in the right rough and walked off the tee with his head up.
