Chapter 13: Normal
Nobody in the booth said anything while the word hung in the speakers.
Randall did not look at Darren.
He looked at the black screen, and then at the speakers.
"Play the end of it again," he said.
Philip played it from the dressing room door closing.
My husband stood with his coat open and watched his own back leave the frame.
He watched Darren step in, and kiss Danica, and put his hand where Randall's hand had been.
He watched all of it without moving, and I waited for the moment his face would give way.
It didn't.
When the file ended, Randall took a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his hands, one finger at a time.
"That's a rehearsal," he said.
"Randall," Darren said, very gently.
"Season five opens with a pregnancy. Danica has been running those pages with you for weeks." He folded the handkerchief. "You were reading her the other man's lines."
"That's exactly what it was," said Darren.
I stared at them both.
"Then show me the page," I said. "Put it in my hand and I'll read it here."
"Scripts have money in them, Helena."
"There is no script with my name in it."
"There's one with a wife," he said, and turned to me for the first time. "It's a very good one. You found it on a school computer at dawn, with a man you met this month."
Philip's chair creaked.
"That's not what happened," he said.
"Professor, I'm sure you believe that."
"Dad," Bennett said.
Randall held up one hand.
