Chapter 20: Nobody's Way Out
Philip's kitchen had one lamp on and a radio turned low.
He had driven me there after the last photographer left, and neither of us had said where we were going.
Bennett had gone with his grandmother and the booth student to a diner, and he had kissed my cheek on the curb.
"Go," he'd said. "I mean it."
Now I stood by the table with my coat still on.
"You said it in front of two hundred people," I said.
"I did."
"You didn't ask me first."
"No." He put the kettle on, and turned around, and leaned on the counter with his arms folded. "I should have. I'd say I'm sorry, but it's the one thing I'd do again."
"I said something to you on Monday."
"You said you weren't anyone's way out."
"I meant it." I took off the coat and laid it over a chair. "I'm not a door you step through to leave your grief behind."
"I know."
"So you'd better tell me what I am."
He looked at me for a while.
The radio played something with a saxophone in it.
"A woman who walked out of a screening room on the worst night of her life," he said.
"Go on."
"Then she sat in the fourth row and watched her son get a diploma. She took a microphone and didn't raise her voice."
He stepped away from the counter.
"I'm not getting away from anything, Helena. I'm standing in my own kitchen, looking at you."
The kettle began to hiss behind him.
Neither of us moved to turn it off.
"Then come here," I said.
