Chapter 21: The Second Toothbrush

Philip's POV

I woke at six, as I had every day for six years.

The house was quiet, and for the first time it was not empty.

There was a woman asleep on my left, with her hair across my pillow and one hand open on the sheet.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I got up carefully and went downstairs in yesterday's trousers, and put the kettle on again.

It was the same kettle. It had boiled dry in the night, and a ring of scale had dried on the bottom.

I scrubbed it out in the sink and refilled it.

My wife's mug was on the shelf above the window, where it had been since March six years ago. It had a chip in the rim.

I had never used it, and I had never moved it.

I took it down and looked at it, and I put it back, because it was hers.

Then I took a second mug from the cupboard, one of mine, and set it beside the kettle for Helena.

That was a very small act, and it took me a long time to do.

My phone rang before the water boiled.

"Professor Llewellyn." It was the dean. "I wanted you to hear this from me. The studio's lawyers have withdrawn the complaint in writing, with an apology. Your student's letter is gone too."

"Thank you."

"I saw the video of yesterday. It's everywhere." She cleared her throat. "The board would like you to know that nobody here has any intention of moving you off campus. Take the day."

"I will."

"Professor?"
