Chapter 17: Six to Two
Stanley's statement ran in the Tribune the next morning, in a box on page two.
Romy read it out loud over the croissants, in the voice she uses for health inspectors.
"'Mr. Kirkbride regrets that his brother has been taken in by a woman with a long record of pursuing wealthy men. The family will not comment further.'" She put the paper down. "A long record. You have a parking ticket."
"It's from 2021," I said.
"They have it on file. They could print it."
Declan stood at the window with his coffee, not drinking it.
"The board meets at ten," he said. "It was called overnight. Stanley is moving to remove my seat."
"Can he?"
"He has six votes of eight. I have mine and a woman who has never liked him."
"So you'll lose."
"I'll lose." He turned. "I need to be in that room when I do."
"They cancelled your cards."
"They did."
I put down my cup.
"Then I'm coming," I said. "A shareholder's wife can walk into the lobby of a public company's tower. And she can make a phone call on the way."
The call was to the Tribune reporter who had covered my wedding.
She was at the front doors of Kirkbride Tower in nineteen minutes, with a photographer and a second reporter from a radio station.
It was not the same photographer.
I noticed that and almost laughed.
The lobby guard looked at Declan's dead card, and then at the reporter's tape recorder, and then at me.
"Mr. Kirkbride," he said, miserably. "I've been told."
"I know you have," Declan said. "I'm going up to the fortieth floor. You can call my brother's office and tell him, or you can let me walk."
The guard called.
It took three minutes, and in those three minutes the radio reporter asked the guard four quiet questions into her microphone.
