Chapter 15: Table Fourteen
"Table fourteen is by the swinging doors," Joan said. "I've worked a wedding there. You get every tray that falls."
We sat on upturned crates in the back of her uncle's shop, with a box of day-old donuts between us.
I had told her about the text while we drove over.
"She wants me in the corner, in black, looking tragic," I said.
"So give her tragic."
"How?"
"You go in through the kitchen." Joan licked sugar off her thumb. "Cooks love me. They love anyone who brings them a motorcycle story. You walk through the swinging doors in front of the entire room, and they all think a dead woman just came out of the soup."
"I'm not dead."
"That's the joke, Veda."
I laughed so hard a donut fell off my knee.
"And the dress?"
"Black, like she asked." Joan grinned. "Cut down to here, with a slit up to there. Glenn is going to have a stroke in the parking lot."
