Chapter 18: The Raise
Glenn read the letter standing in the lobby.
It was two pages on heavy paper, with the lawyer's name across the top.
I read it over his arm.
The payments from Horvath Mechanical to Mrs. Margaret Prewitt were gifts, the letter said.
Gifts could not be recovered, and no one was obliged to account for them.
Given the strain of her daughter's illness, Mrs. Prewitt now requested that Mr. Horvath raise his monthly gift to six thousand dollars, effective immediately.
If he declined, she would speak publicly about the nature of his marriage.
"A raise," Glenn said.
"Call it what you like," my mother said sweetly. "It's a courtesy. I did you a favor, you know. You'd still be eating dinner alone."
The lawyer cleared his throat and looked at his shoes.
Glenn folded the letter in half.
"My crew starts at seven-thirty," he said. "They gather on the shop floor for a meeting. I'd like you to come meet them."
