We were married again on the reservoir, on a Sunday at four, with the water flat and gold behind us.
There were thirty chairs on the gravel beach, and none of them matched.
My father walked me down the aisle in the funeral suit and a new blue tie, and he did not let go of my arm until the end.
"You look like your grandmother," he whispered.
"Is that good?"
"It's the best thing I know."
I wore a plain white dress that stopped at my knee, Nana's pearls, and a pair of black boots.
Joan stood at the front as my best woman, in her leather vest with a white carnation pinned to it.
She had been crying since the first song and did not care who knew.
Glenn waited under the bare maple in a dark suit, with his hands clasped in front of him to keep them still.
He looked at me the whole way.
When I reached him, he said, very low, "You wore the boots."
"I'm going to want to leave fast."
His mouth moved. It was the closest he came to a laugh that day.
The priest read the words, plain and short.
Then Glenn took both my hands.
